Field Trip to Colonial Williamsburg

On November 15, my Early American Architecture History class traveled to Colonial Williamsburg for a day of close observation and immersive learning.

The trip included a private tour that allowed us special access to several historic buildings, offering a rare opportunity to step inside spaces that are often only discussed in lectures and readings. Experiencing these interiors firsthand made questions of scale, material, and craftsmanship feel immediate rather than abstract.

After the tour, we had time to wander and explore the site on our own. Moving through the replicated colonial environment blurred the line between history and experience, encouraging observation not just of individual buildings, but of how architecture, public space, and daily life were designed to work together. The visit added a tangible layer to the course, grounding early American architectural history in physical space and lived context.
