Raising Housing Concerns in Student Council

On September 30, during a Student Council meeting, I used the community concerns portion of the agenda to raise issues surrounding on-Grounds housing and the future of the University’s residential colleges.

By that point in the semester, it had become clear that recent changes to housing policies and procedures were affecting residential colleges in ways that extended beyond routine administrative adjustments. While I recognize the complexity of housing policy at an institution of this scale, housing decisions were disrupting continuity within these communities and raising broader questions about whether the residential college model was being meaningfully supported within the University’s long-term strategy.

In Student Council, I spoke to the manner in which these changes were being introduced, particularly the lack of transparency and limited student involvement in the process. Residential colleges rely on long-term stability and trust between students and the institution. When policies shift without clear communication, that trust begins to erode, especially for upperclassmen who have invested years in building and sustaining these communities.

The discussion was later covered by The Cavalier Daily, placing these remarks within a wider conversation about housing policy, governance, and student voice at UVA. Raising these concerns in Student Council marked a shift from private negotiation to open advocacy, ensuring that questions about the future of residential colleges entered the University-wide dialogue rather than remaining confined to closed-door discussions.
