Ursa Major 10-Year Anniversary

In late October, the Ursa Major Society, a long-standing secret society based at the IRC, marked its 10-year anniversary with a masquerade that transformed an ordinary Monday night into something memorable.

The planning began with a simple request. On October 23, the society reached out to the IRC Council for help preparing for the anniversary, asking for assistance with outreach and logistics. A few days later, a handwritten letter appeared in the Munford kitchen calling for liaisons to help facilitate the event. At our weekly council meeting that Sunday, I stepped forward alongside another council member to take on the role.

From there, things moved quickly. Supplies began arriving in stages, sometimes in ways that were difficult to explain. One package appeared while we were gathered just steps away, unnoticed until an email instructed us to look. By Monday evening, detailed instructions followed, and just an hour before the event began, the final pieces arrived, including charcuterie boards and ingredients to bake two chocolate cakes.

The final hour was a blur of setup, coordination, and last-minute adjustments. With help from fellow council members and quiet guidance from those who knew more than they let on, the masquerade came together just in time. The event itself was warm, elegant, and communal, drawing residents together for a rare formal evening at the IRC.
